My fantasy design for a Sleeping Beauties gown for the 2024 Met Gala. If you need a last minute gown for the Met Gala, I’m sure we could work something out.

Happy First Monday in May, for all who celebrate

May 05, 2024

Happy Met Gala day! As a lover of costume design, I can't let this day pass without sharing something special with you. You see, whenever I step into a museum, my feet bee-line straight to the costume exhibit. It's like a magnetic pull I can't resist.

Given my background as a fiber artist, a home sewist, and an illustrator, costume design feels like a natural extension of my creative journey. So, I decided to add it to my artistic bucket list.

This year's theme — Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion

Let's talk theme. This year, the focus is on the idea of garments in a museum collection being "sleeping beauties" since they are no longer worn. It also references the fairy tale of the same name, and the countless fashion inspirations drawn from stories. I can't wait. It is going to be a stunner, for sure.

If I ran a Haute Couture fashion house...

If I were to design a costume for this year's Met Gala theme, here's what I envision: a breathtaking gown crafted from swishy gossamer chiffon, adorned with a lace overskirt made of delicate spun cording. Instead of traditional tassels, the skirt ends in drop spindles. It is a nod to the fairy tale's spinning wheel, and adds a touch of whimsy and intrigue.

And let's not forget the pièce de résistance—the model's head adorned with a silk sleep cap, crowned with a diadem of the moon and stars. It's a celestial masterpiece that would surely turn heads on the red carpet.

So, as we celebrate the magic of fashion and creativity tonight, I invite you to dream alongside me. Who knows? Maybe one day our visions will grace the halls of the Met Gala too.

Until then, keep dreaming big and reaching for the stars.

Warm regards,

Katherine
